How to Prepare Your HVAC Company for the Local Services Ads Move: A Google Local Service Ads Checklist for HVAC and Plumbing Companies and Any HVAC Contractor
If you run an HVAC company, Google has already put you in line. Its migration page names HVAC, plumbing, and electrical in the first group of US home and storefront service advertisers, and that means your Google Local Service Ads account is moving into Google Ads whether the rest of your week is ready or not.
The good news is that most of the prep takes an hour or two, and Google tells you what to do. We'll walk through it in order, and we'll mark what's Google's word and what's our read, because a lot of HVAC marketing strategies out there blur the two.
Is Your HVAC Business in the First Group?
Google says the first phase starts in August 2026 for select home and storefront service advertisers in the United States, including plumbing, HVAC, electrical, appliance repair, house cleaning, lawn care, roofing, pest control, and moving. Late 2026 brings service-area businesses without physical storefronts and accounts with custom bidding or booking. Everyone else follows in 2027.
Your account administrator gets an email 14 days before your move, plus a warning banner in your dashboard, and a final reminder 7 days later. If you don't know who that administrator is, find out this week, since that inbox is where the date shows up. Our post on the Google Ads migration for contractors has the bigger picture.
How Google Local Service Ads Work for HVAC Companies
Here's the quick version for any HVAC business that never ran PPC. A regular Google ad charges you per click, and you build it around keywords. Local Services Ads charge you per lead, like a phone call or a message, and the campaign has no keywords at all, since Google uses your service categories and service areas to match high-intent local searches. Your ad shows on Google Search and Google Maps, and Google says that stays exactly the same after the move.
Google keeps your calls, messages, and call recordings on the Leads page, so you can see which calls got charged without a separate call tracking tool. That page is your lead flow for the whole account. After the move it's a table under Goals and Conversions in Google Ads.
Step by Step: Get Your HVAC Company Ready for the LSA Move
Here's the order we'd do it in, with Google's own advice marked as Google's.
- 1Save your reports now. Google says your historical performance reports won't carry over, so take screenshots or download them, and use our post on exporting your LSA reporting history if you're not sure what to grab.
- 2Find your account administrator's email and make sure someone checks it daily during heating and cooling season, since the move notice goes there.
- 3Open your Google Business Profile and fix your business name, address, hours, and phone number, because Google says they sync one way into Google Ads. A big change can trigger a 24 to 48 hour review, so read why editing your profile can pause your ads before touching anything.
- 4Keep at least one person opted in to lead email notifications. Google says your account needs one active user opted in at all times.
- 5Swap out any Better Business Bureau callout, since Google says BBB callouts are no longer supported, and plan to pick at least six other callouts such as business hours or specialties.
- 6Write down your weekly budget, your average cost per lead, and your lead count for the last 90 days. That's our advice, so you have a baseline to compare against.
- 7Check your service areas and make sure they match where your trucks actually go.
Verification and Your Google Guaranteed Badge
If you earned the old Google Guaranteed badge, you don't start over. Google says your verified status and Google Verified badge transfer to Google Ads automatically, and that insurance and license reverification are no longer required. If any extra business checks are ever needed, you'll see a notification in your Google Ads account. We cover the name change in our post on what happened to the Google Guaranteed badge.
Answer the Phone: Lead Flow for HVAC Services Depends on It
HVAC lives on the phone, and Google says responsiveness is a primary driver of your ad performance and local rankings. Its best practices page says to answer calls promptly during your targeted hours, cut down missed calls, and return missed connections right away.
The cost side changed too. Google's lead pages say a missed call during your business hours counts as a lead if the caller stays on the line for more than 20 seconds, and a call that goes to voicemail counts as connected, whether or not they leave a message. Our post on the 20 second missed call charge covers it. For a shop with techs on roofs and in attics, our read is that a service call routed to a live person or an answering service costs less than a lead you pay for and never reach, and that goes double for emergency HVAC calls at night.
Budget Math for a Seasonal HVAC Business
Google says your historical average weekly budget gets divided by 7 to set a daily average, and that your monthly spend is capped at that daily average times 30.4. Here's an example, not your numbers. A $700 weekly budget becomes $100 a day, and $100 times 30.4 is $3,040 for the month.
Google also says daily spend may fluctuate on busy days, but monthly billing won't go over the cap. That matters in a heat wave or a cold snap, when HVAC demand spikes and your budget can run out earlier than you'd like. Our post on weekly budgets becoming daily budgets goes deeper, and why your Google Ads bill went up helps if the numbers look off.
Cost Per Lead and Target CPA for an HVAC Contractor
Manual bidding, like setting a maximum cost per lead, is no longer supported. Google says Maximize Conversions is the default, and that you should only set a Target CPA if your campaign gets more than 15 leads a month and your cost per lead is higher than you'd like. It also warns that a target set too low can keep your ads from showing. Our post on the cost per lead cap going away has the details.
Google doesn't promise what your price per lead will be after the move. If anyone offers you a number, that's their guess. Owners report everything from cheap qualified leads to expensive ones, and that's owner talk, not Google.
HVAC and Plumbing Companies: One Account, Two Trades
If you run both trades, here's a detail Google spells out. A single campaign-level Target CPA gets applied to every vertical in the account, so your HVAC and plumbing leads share one target. Google says that if you want separate bidding rules, you can set up separate campaigns for each, and it uses plumbing and HVAC as its own example. Set that up with Google's local services page, since new pay per lead campaigns can't be created inside Google Ads yet.
Where SEO and Other HVAC Marketing Strategies Fit
Local Services Ads are one lead source, and they don't replace the rest. Your profile and your reviews feed the ad, so keep them healthy, since Google says to aim for 5 or more reviews with a steady stream of new ones. A good SEO setup, a decent website, and a phone number that gets answered all help the same shop. We'd keep a little money in each, and we'd watch which one fills the calendar.
Lead Generation After Your Account Moves
Google says to allow up to two weeks for the move to finish and for performance to settle. Log in the first day and check your settings, and compare your lead count, your budget, and your service areas to the notes you took. If the phone goes quiet, read why leads stop coming in, and if you can't get into the old view, what to do when the LSA dashboard is locked helps.
