Why did my Google Ads bill go up? The 2026 budget change nobody told you about

You log in, check your spend, and the number is higher than last month. You didn't touch anything. This is the 2026 budget change nobody warned you about.

Why is my bill higher when I didn't change anything?

Two things changed at once. Your weekly budget became a daily budget, and your max cost per lead cap went away. Either one can push your bill up, and together they often do.

How does the weekly to daily switch raise my bill?

Your old weekly budget is divided by 7 to get a daily average. That daily number is then multiplied by 30.4 to set a monthly ceiling. A $700 week used to mean about $2,800 a month. Now it means $3,040 a month, which is an 8.6 percent raise you didn't ask for.

The full math with a worked example is in the weekly to daily budget post.

What about the cost per lead cap?

The max cost per lead setting is gone. It's replaced by a Target CPA, and that's a goal, not a ceiling. Some leads will cost more than your old cap, some less, and Google aims at the average. If your Target CPA is too loose, your bill climbs faster. More on that in the cost per lead cap post.

How do I set the daily budget back?

Decide what you actually want to spend in a month. For a true $2,800 month from a $700 week, set about $92 a day. For the same yearly spend as before, use $700 times 52 divided by 365, which is $99.73 a day.

Write your old weekly number down before you forget it, then compare your first full month to the ceiling you expected.

What should I watch this month?

  • Daily spend against your new monthly ceiling.
  • Cost per lead by service, not blended across every job type.
  • Whether your Target CPA is set from real history or a guess.
  • Conversion tracking, because a target on bad data wastes money.
